Man Utd keen to sign £15m Leeds star who wants to leave Elland Road

Manchester United are now in the race to sign Ao Tanaka from Leeds United this summer, with Michael Carrick impressed by the midfielder’s performances at Old Trafford.

Tanaka pushing for an exit from Leeds

Man United got a chance to see Tanaka’s quality firsthand last Monday, as Leeds secured their first win at Old Trafford in 45 years and the midfielder more than played his part.

It may also have been a reminder that the Whites needed his quality a week after scoring a crucial goal in their FA Cup semi-final against West Ham United.

Their recognition that this is a player capable of playing every week in the Premier League may have come too late, however, as reports now suggest that Tanaka will push for a move away from the club.

A new contract at Elland Road has yet to be rescinded, but it remains to be seen whether Tanaka will agree to accept his game time for another season.

Daniel Farke would hope so, telling reporters recently: “This is his first season at a high level, and it took him some time to get used to this level and provide consistency.

Man Utd want to make a quick deal and part with £9m in midfielder talks

The Red Devils are one of three seasons trying to get the price down.

“There was a lot of criticism at times, but if he plays like he did on Monday, it will be good. Ao is a very important player for us.”

Alas, the ball appears to be in the midfielder’s court and he could yet complete a major betrayal by leaving Elland Road for Man United this summer.

Man Utd red alert in Tanaka race

According to TeamTalk, Man United are now keeping an eye on the race to sign Tanaka which could be one of the most surprising moves of the summer given the rivalry between the two clubs.

Priced at £15m, Carrick was reportedly impressed by the Japan international on Monday and would like to add him to his midfield squad.

Man United’s midfield problems are well documented. Adding reinforcements to that area is a clear priority for INEOS this summer, with names like Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson emerging as their top directors in that regard.

Failing that, however, Tanaka could provide the Red Devils with an unexpected gem.

It was a complete display for the 27-year-old last Monday and it should have been enough to send Leeds heading for contract talks.

As things stand, Tanaka’s current deal expires in 2028. On paper that should give the Whites plenty of time to strike a deal, but the interest from Man United could yet throw a spanner in the works as the midfielder considers his future.
