FSG are discussing the next Wirtz in a £70m deal

Liverpool have reached the business stage of the 2025/26 campaign, and there is no doubt that Arne Slot’s tenure hangs in the balance.

Twice under Jurgen Klopp’s management, the Reds have suffered what you might call ‘testing periods’, injuries which damaged Liverpool’s Premier League title in 2020/21 before the likes of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho ended in 2023/24.

Here is an important difference. Both times under Klopp, Liverpool found form in the final months of the season, putting their mistakes down to possession and concentration. There is little sign of that under the Slot this season, having been dispatched by Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain in the FA Cup and Champions League respectively, both defeats by 4-0 scores.

Now, change is needed, and while the future of Slot is uncertain, FSG is in concert that aggressive changes are needed. Let’s just hope Liverpool earn their place in the Champions League next year. Failure to do so will jeopardize the squad’s plans.

Liverpool are already in talks for the Premier League striker

Since joining Liverpool in what was a British record £115m deal, Florian Wirtz has flown and flowed, to say the least.

To put it bluntly, the German didn’t come close to the standards expected when he arrived, being billed as a professional.

The 22-year-old has experienced tough and unforgiving conditions on Merseyside, however, and there is still belief in his world-class abilities. He needs help though, especially with Hugo Ekitike tearing his Achilles and Mohamed Salah set to leave on a free transfer this summer.

According to TEAMtalk, help could come in the form of Anthony Gordon, with the Newcastle United striker looking to leave Eddie Howe’s project this summer.

The England international is keen on a change of scenery, and amid talks between FSG officials and the player’s representatives, he is eyeing Anfield as his dream destination after leaving Liverpool at the age of 11.

Liverpool are believed to be the better option over Bayern Munich, considering Gordon’s choice to return to Merseyside, with a £50m-£70m price tag already raised.

Why Anthony Gordon could be the next Wirtz

Gordon is visited by more clubs than just Liverpool. That said, Bayern’s interest could see a repeat of the deal that secured the signing of Wirtz last season.

Wirtz informed Bayer Leverkusen that he wished to leave, and a three-horse race emerged involving Liverpool, Bayern and Manchester City.

The Reds have won, and while Wirtz has yet to live up to the hype, he has the talent to do so, especially if Slot can solve Liverpool’s wide tactical imbalances.

Self-described as “a full-back’s nightmare” to deal with, Gordon’s versatility is one of his greatest strengths, consistently dangerous whether he’s playing his preferred left-back role, or indeed as a full-back, as has become so common in St. James’ Park now where Alexander Isak plays for Liverpool.

This season, there’s no question that the 24-year-old has struggled like Wirtz. However, Gordon has enjoyed a purple patch in recent weeks, and has now scored 17 goals in all competitions for the Tynesider. He is the top scorer in all competitions this season.

He will certainly provide a contrast to the much-maligned Cody Gakpo on Merseyside next season, with guidance that could unlock the subtle qualities in Wirtz’s skill set.

Will Wirtz fit in a Liverpool shirt? That remains to be seen. Likewise, Gordon has a lot to prove in the Premier League, especially if he joins a club like Liverpool.

The two could form a partnership, with Gordon imitating the German talent in choosing Anfield and joining him in his rise to stardom.
