The £4.5m Rangers dud has turned out to be a bigger flop than Danilo

Glasgow Rangers did a great job in the January transfer window by bringing in Tochi Chukwuani, Tuur Rommens and Ryan Naderi to strengthen their squad.

Andreas Skov Olsen, signed on loan from Wolfsburg, did not work out as a permanent addition, but he still has time to make a name for himself at Ibrox.

While the incoming players are worthy of praise, the best job the Light Blues have done has been to move several players who were left out of demand under Danny Rohl, such as Danilo.

After scoring three goals in 14 Scottish Premiership appearances in the first half of the campaign, the Brazilian defender was loaned out to NEC Nijmegen in the winter window.

The Dutch club have the option to make the deal permanent this summer, but he has scored just one goal in seven Eredivisie games for his current club.

Although it remains to be seen whether or not Danilo will complete a move to Nijmegen at the end of the season, there was another striker who could leave.

The Brazilian was not the only Light Blues striker to be offloaded by the Scottish giants during the January transfer window.

Colombian winger Oscar Cortes has joined Huracan on loan for the 2026 campaign and they have an option to sign him permanently for up to £1.65m.

Now, according to Football Insider, Cortes wants to seal a permanent move away from Ibrox at the end of his loan spell, which will take place at the end of December.

The report states that the former RC Lens winner has no future in Glasgow as he will not be part of Rohl’s plans for the 2026/27 campaign.

He adds that, although he still wants to play in Europe, Cortes could be interested in signing a deal to move to Huracan permanently in the January transfer window in 2027, at the end of his loan.

Oscar Cortes has been a bigger flop for Rangers than Danilo

Now, Danilo could be considered the biggest flop for the Light Blues as he could leave permanently this summer after joining Feyenoord for £6m in 2023.

The Brazilian striker missed 63 games through injury in less than three full seasons with the Gers and never scored more than six goals in all competitions in a single campaign.

Given the money spent on his services under Michael Beale, it’s fair to say that Danilo has not lived up to expectations at Ibrox, despite some quality moments in front of goal.

Cortes, however, has been a bigger flop than Danilo because of how little he had on the pitch in Glasgow before joining Huracan on loan.

The Colombian was signed by Lens for £4.5m in the summer of 2025, as part of an agreed transfer, after spending 18 months on loan and producing one goal and one assist in 16 Premiership appearances.

It meant the winger was sent out on loan to Sporting Gijon making just one competitive appearance after being signed permanently for £4.5m, as Russell Martin didn’t see him as good enough to be part of the club.

Should Cortes confirm a permanent move to Huracan at the end of his loan spell, the 22-year-old striker will leave Rangers with one goal and two assists in 21 appearances in all competitions.

Danilo, at least, scored 16 goals and provided 11 assists in 76 games for the club before his departure in January, showing that he contributed more to the team than Cortes ever did.

The Gers will also lose out heavily if Huracan pay £1.65m to sign the striker permanently, as they paid £4.5m to sign him from Lens last summer.

It didn’t work out for Cortes at Ibrox and it seems best for all parties involved to force him out permanently, because he was an even bigger flop than Danilo and doesn’t seem to have a future under Rohl.
