Both groups want one thing as the timeline unfolds
West Bromwich Albion have been charged with breaching the EFL’s P&S rules, and Sky Sports reporter Rob Dorsett has now issued a major update on the timing of any potential punishment.
West Brom are in danger after Portsmouth beat Ipswich
The battle for relegation from the Championship changed again on Wednesday night, when Portsmouth came out on top 2-1 against promotion-chasing Ipswich Town at Fratton Park, taking them four points clear of the bottom three.
West Brom, on the other hand, are fighting for their lives, sitting just two points above the religious zone, although James Morrison has made his side very difficult to beat since being appointed manager until the end of the season at the beginning of March.
As things stand, however, the two-point cushion may not be enough for Albion, as they are reportedly on the verge of a three-point penalty, if found guilty of breaching the EFL’s P&S rules.
In the same report, it has been suggested that the Baggies may not receive a penalty until after the season ends, which will have a major impact on the relegation battle, as the surrounding teams will not know how many points are needed to stay.
However, Dorsett have now dropped an important update, in a Sky Sports report, making it clear that a decision is expected soon, in order to maintain the integrity of the competition.
“It is possible, but it is unlikely that I will be told that the punishment will be decided after the last games of the Championship season, all the teams are pushing hard for a quick decision.”
Dorsett also confirmed that he had been told West Brom’s infringement was ‘minor’ rather than ‘serious’, meaning that if points were to be deducted, it could be lighter than the six-point penalty Leicester City received earlier this season.
Kevin Phillips supports James Morrison with an endless career
After picking up 11 points in his first eight games in charge, Morrison can still keep the Baggies going, albeit with a points deduction, and former striker Kevin Phillips has now backed him to land the job permanently.
Phillips says: “I would like to see him get this job permanently, he has come in and done an excellent job, yes, it is a waste of being relegated but they are in good shape, James has shown that he can handle pressure.
“I know the player, I played with him,” he added. “I would like to see him given a chance, but I am afraid that the team may want someone with experience, but they have tried that.
“So why not? I’d like to see James (get it). The fans love him. I’d like to see him given a chance next season for sure.”
