Assistant head football coach at Arizona State University Steven Miller died at the age of 29, the university confirmed on Thursday, April 16.
No cause of death has been determined for Miller, who died Wednesday, April 15, according to Miller The Arizona Republic. The Sun Devils canceled practice on Thursday due to the news.
“The Sun Devil Football family is mourning the passing of Steven Miller,” the football program posted on social media Thursday. “We send our thoughts to those who knew and loved him.”
Miller played 49 games for Arizona State during his college days from 2015 to 2019. After earning assistant degrees at the University of Louisiana and the University of Florida, he returned to ASU in 2023.
Miller has epilepsy, according to the The Arizona Republicand has “endured medical complications” in recent weeks.
Chris Karpman of SunDevilSource.com was the first to report the news of Miller’s death.
“I was talking to him personally last Tuesday, following ASU’s practice, when he had a medical incident,” Karpman wrote of X. “He came back to practice on Tuesday and I talked to him again. He was smiling and in good spirits. I thought he was going to be fine. That made me happy for him. To hear that he passed was one of the worst things I’ve ever felt closing his team and it made me feel close to him. He was a great influence on people and he will be remembered that way.”
Within hours of the news of Miller’s death, Arizona State players took to social media to remember their coach.

The head coach Kenny Dillingham he also posted a tribute, writing about X, “We are praying for everyone who knew Steve. He was a joy to people that was unparalleled and touched many lives. We have lost a good one #SunDevil4LIFE.”

Miller recently spoke to the media about his time in Tempe after the Sun Devils lost to Texas in the Peach Bowl in January 2025.
“These are things as a player that I’ve dreamed about, personally, to see these guys make this place, the Valley work,” he told The Arizona Republic. “That’s all you can ask for.”
Arizona State is scheduled to host the Arizona State Fan Fest on Friday, April 17 from 5 to 7:30 pm They also have football practice scheduled for the following day. The university has not announced that any event will go ahead as planned.
