As well as impressing at club level, the 61-year-old has excelled in international management, described as “unbelievable” by footballer David Cotterill after leading Italy to Euro 2021 glory against England.

The Italian, who prefers to use a 4-2-3-1 formation, has the experience to replace Howe at Newcastle, but has not managed a top club since his spell with Inter Milan ended in 2016, which may be a slight concern.
