Swedish singer Robyn you conquer parenthood – like dancing – everything alone.
“I thought it was going to happen soon,” Robyn, 46, said The guard in a profile published Friday, March 27, of her parenting style. “However, I think being a mother in a normal heterosexual relationship, in my life at least, was really hard to reconcile with what I think I would have to do to do that job.”
After Robyn’s split in 2020, she decided to undergo in vitro fertilization (IVF) in hopes of getting pregnant. (The “Dancing On My Own” singer froze her eggs when she was 34.)
“I would be able to accept the negative things in a relationship without children,” she said. But, when there are children, everything the other person does is very important. The idea of having children in the relationship I had felt like a very dangerous thing. [like] that was more terrifying than waiting.”
Robyn (real name Robin Miriam Carlsson) ended up waiting until she was 40 to start the IVF process.
“I was old. I didn’t know if it would work. I did a few rounds,” he recalls of the process. “It was very painful, but it also makes you think about things you wouldn’t think about otherwise. Who am I as a person who has children, and what don’t I have? There’s a lot.”
Robyn continued, “I had seen myself having a child in a stable relationship. I felt bad about giving it up. It felt like a failure. … I don’t think anyone can say, ‘I have a right to have a child.’ But if you want it, you can’t really doubt your desire to be a parent. You can ask how you do it and who you do it with, but you cannot doubt the real need. It’s like, ‘Why are we here?’
According to Robyn, she found IVF “very tough.”
“It’s definitely a challenge, physically and mentally,” said the singer. “But ‘boohoo, I had to do IVF,’ and it’s a privilege. The fact that it’s possible! It’s something that costs money, and a lot of people don’t even have the option.”
Robyn welcomed her son Tyko in July 2023, who is now raising her only child as a single parent.
“It is very difficult to be a single mother or father.” I grew up that way,” he admitted to a British newspaper, talking about his parents’ divorce in his childhood. “My mother was tired and struggling, and I didn’t want to repeat the things I went through as a child.
