Moriah Wilson appeared to have a bright future in the world of gravel cycling before he was found dead at the age of 25 at a friend’s home in 2022 – the victim of a gruesome shooting.

The police investigation initially focused on whether Wilson may have been killed as part of a home invasion or robbery before the shocking theory emerged.

Who was Moriah Wilson?
Anna Moriah “Mo” Wilson grew up in Kirby, Vermont, and graduated from Dartmouth College in 2019.
Wilson developed an interest in cycling at an early age and was a nationally ranked junior skier in his youth. As an adult, the athlete worked for Specialized Bicycle Components as he competed on the professional gravel racing circuit.

Who killed Moriah Wilson?
Moriah Wilson was found dead from three gunshot wounds on May 11, 2022, at a friend’s home the night before the race in Hico, Texas. (Wilson was shot twice in the head and in the chest.)
It was reported that Wilson had gone swimming with cycling coach Colin Strickland hours before he was killed. The two had a brief relationship when Strickland temporarily broke up with his longtime girlfriend Kaitlin Marie Armstrong.
Police brought Strickland in for an interview since he was the last person known to have seen Wilson alive. The stone runner underestimated the seriousness of his flight with Wilson.
“I mean, honestly, it was like a distraction, [a] rest,” Strickland told police.
Armstrong’s black Jeep Grand Cherokee was seen near the scene before Wilson’s murder, leading police to suspect him as a person of interest early on.
The anonymous tipster also told the Austin Police Department that Armstrong was “angry and shaking with anger” when he learned that Strickland had been with Wilson.

Courtesy of NetflixStrickland and Armstrong were both released from custody pending investigation. Police attempted to serve an arrest warrant on Armstrong at his Austin, Texas residence four days later, but discovered he had fled the state.
The suspected killer fled to Santa Teresa, Costa Rica, where he underwent surgery to correct his facial features and dramatically changed his hair.
“He was acting normal. Maybe like a shy patient,” his surgeon, Dr. Jorge Badillahe told NBC The date line in April 2024. “He had a hat, or a hoodie, and he had a mask on so we could only see his eyes.”

US Marshals finally caught up with Armstrong while he was working in Costa Rica as a yoga instructor. Authorities were finally able to arrest her on June 29, 2022, after posting fake yoga ads.
However, Armstrong continued to cause problems for the authorities when he was extradited to the US to face murder charges. He allegedly tried to evade his security detail during a doctor’s appointment but was quickly recaptured, according to Fox 7 Austin.
What happened to Kaitlin Marie Armstrong?
Kaitlin Marie Armstrong was indicted on July 21, 2022, and pleaded not guilty to murdering Moriah Wilson. He is being held on a $3.5 million bond at the Travis County Jail in Austin, Texas.
After a three-week trial, Armstrong was convicted of first-degree murder on November 16, 2023. He was sentenced to 90 years in prison and ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. (You are eligible for parole after serving at least 30 years.)
