The Amazon Prime video series “The Boys” is back for its fifth and final season, and showrunner Eric Kripke noted in an interview that the superhero show is heavily inspired by real life.
He said it’s “a sinking feeling” to watch real-world events transcend the satire of his show.
“It’s not a great feeling. It’s a sinking feeling. It’s never good when the world destroys your superhero show with exploding genitalia,” Kripke told The Hollywood Reporter in an April 7 article, citing “concentration camps” and the use of federal troops in cities.
He also criticized the leadership, referring to “the man in charge of the military” when commenting on Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.

“The Boys” follows a group of vigilantes who take on corrupt heroes who abuse their power and prominence. Kripke previously compared the show’s main villain, Homelander, to President Donald Trump.

Despite the sharp political commentary, Kripke maintains that “the conflict of the show is not with the people” but with those in power. He noted that the writers included a “right-winger” character who is portrayed as a “good guy,” explaining that the show focuses on “really troubled leaders.”

The premiere opens with Homelander, decked out in an American flag, addressing a rally with patriotic icons. As the crowd chants “USA,” the camera pans to certain figures, including a pregnant woman and a man in a red hat, who viewers say resembles the late activist Charlie Kirk.
During the meeting, Homelander refers to “freedom camps” where civilians are imprisoned, uses phrases like “golden dawn” and labels opponents as terrorists.

Kripke told Rolling Stone in 2022 that Homelander “has always been an analogue of Trump.”
In 2024, Amazon Prime Video added a statement to the end of season 4, originally titled “Assassination Run,” after an attempt to kill Trump.
While the show remains popular with Amazon, many fans say the writing has gone too far.
One user wrote on X, which has nearly 2 million views, “The boys are another example of the Hollywood left trying to demonize the food right and make them look bad.”
A second user wrote that the first 20 minutes of the season included “all free speech.”
