Paramount Network Company Yellowstonewhich aired from 2018 to 2024, first introduced Us to Grimes, 42, as Kayce Dutton. After the show ended, it was announced that the actor will host his own CBS series, which follows Kayce as he leaves “life behind to join an elite unit” of the US Marshals while “combining his skills as a cowboy and a Navy SEAL to bring justice to Montana, where he and his colleagues must balance family, psychological work and the cost of protecting the war and the ultimate war with violence.”

Yellowstone has been extended with several spinoffs — but other shows have been going through major production delays off-screen. Taylor Sheridan’s hit show, which premiered in 2018, introduced viewers to the fictional Dutton family, which owns the largest ranch in Montana. “The first conversation was that it should be something [that happens to Kayce in the series premiere]. There was a thought that, ‘Maybe we get him and he’s just bored because he was protecting his family and he was a Navy SEAL, so really the quiet life is not for him, which is the way,'” Hudnut told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month about the inspiration for the new spinoff. “But it’s probably not a satisfying way for Kayce. Then, in fact, as we were trying to find out, Monica was not part of the ingredients that I had.”

Hudnut clarified that he did not speak with Asbille before it was decided that Monica would be fired.

“No, I wasn’t a part of that, so I can’t really talk about how or why that happened the way it did.” But when that happened, it became clear what that thing was for Kayce,” he said. “And I think the way we did it, my goal was not to downplay that Yellowstone trip because [the dream] — he says, ‘This is a dream come true’ at the end of it. They accomplished that. They got what they wanted in the end, unfortunately life intervened and interfered with everything Kayce wanted. That’s where we find him at Marshalls.”

The Marshals air on CBS Sunday at 8 pm ET.
