Just last week I watched Gerald’s game first and was blown away by its psychological depth. Stephen King’s adaptation uses a simple story in which a woman is handcuffed to a bed after her husband dies during a sex role, leaving her to deal with a hungry dog and a criminal who may be waiting for the right moment to strike. in 2021 Until Death it has the same setup, but a completely different movie with its own identity. I’m not reporting this as a ripoff or a carbon copy because it’s nothing, but if you’re looking for a double feature on Netflix, I’d strongly recommend watching both films back to back and seeing how they play out differently.
Gerald’s game is an almost perfect psychological thriller about trauma, trust, and identity. Until Death it’s a straightforward home invasion game that starts with absolute brilliance and continues to escalate. The handcuff setup I’m about to go into is the only similarity the film has Gerald’s gamebut due to the latter bias it’s all I can think of. Gerald’s game it survives. Until Deaththough I don’t think it’s meant to be, it’s more fun than it has any right to be.

Megan Fox is Emma Davenport, and we are introduced to her as she breaks up with her lover, Tom (Aml Ameen). Tom is a partner in her husband Mark’s (Eoin Macken) criminal defense firm, so no matter who she sleeps with, it happens in a five-star hotel or a holiday home. It’s a great setup because we meet our character midway through the story, which suggests he has no empathy. It just so happens that Emma and Mark are about to celebrate their 11th wedding anniversary, and Marku, who knows that their marriage is on the rocks because of his infidelity, thinks it would be a good idea to bring her to the pool house they used to enjoy in happy times.
The place is decorated with roses, romantic music, and the darkroom that Emma uses for her photography business is filled with pictures of their happy wedding. It’s great fun until Emma wakes up the next day handcuffed to Mark, who then shoots herself in the face.
Rightfully traumatized, Emma needs to figure out how to get home, but there’s a series of problems to sort out. The first and most obvious obstacle is that she is naked and handcuffed to her late husband. He has to carry his body from one room to another, floor to floor, trying to escape. To make matters worse, Mark destroyed his phone, removed all the tools from the basement, drained the gas from all the cars, and his whole plan in death was to make him spend his last moments in life suffering immeasurably.
Not only that Mark knew about the relationship between Emma and Tom, and sent two men named Jimmy and Bobby to the house, who need to access the safe that only he knows the combination. It’s also worth noting that Bobby just finished serving a 10-year sentence for beating Emma, and Mark called him out specifically to challenge him under these circumstances.
This Is Not A Joke, But You Will Laugh
From this point forward Until Deaththe chase is on. Megan Fox is an absolute beast in this movie because she is in full fight or flight mode for most of its running time. He has home field advantage in the sense that he knows the pool house well. He can move around and avoid getting caught, but that’s made even more difficult by the fact that he’s handcuffed to Mark’s corpse and has to figure out how much drag, pun intended, that is. Still, he perseveres, outruns the bad guys, and is always on the verge of certain death because he doesn’t want to go out like this.
I say this movie is funny, but it is far from funny. It’s very dangerous and with all the balls to the wall thriller. But how should I react when Emma uses Mark’s body as a sled from the top floor of her lake house to the bottom? It’s not funny in the slapstick sense, but it makes me laugh because that’s exactly how I would look at the situation, and it’s also bad to look at it with the sound of “Oh no, he didn’t!” kind of way.
It’s also important to note that for most of this movie, Emma is covered in blood for a kick-ass action scene. Until Death in high gear, but he’s so determined to survive that he just rolls with it.
Until Death it’s a brutal watch, but Megan Fox commands every scene she’s in, making it hard to resist her charm and charm. Not only does he take control of an awkward situation, he looks like the perfect boss while doing it.
