Laguna Beach it goes back, it goes back to the beginning – and reveals some of the romances that never happened.
Friday, April 10, 20th anniversary special, titled Reunion: Laguna Beachthe cast of season 1 spilled all the tea on the relationships that were – and weren’t – highlighted in the series. The original show, which ran from 2004 to 2006 on MTV, followed the trials and tribulations of Laguna High School students as they navigated love, friendship and graduation.
But before the secret romance is revealed, boss Casey Wilson have a few hot seat questions about Laguna’s iconic love triangle: Kristin Cavallari, Stephen Colletti again Lauren Conrad.
The love triangle has had a huge impact on Laguna Beach’s popularity, as the pilot episode got off to a great start as Stephen seemed to choose between Kristin, his estranged girlfriend, and Lauren, his longtime best friend. According to the trio, the cameras actually started rolling after the drama ended, but the producers “extended” the conflict to keep things interesting.

“Stephen and I were together for about a year before the cameras came. So my sophomore year, his junior year. Then we broke up at the beginning of my junior year.” [his] old year. That’s when Talan [Torriero] and I had a little something too [he and Lauren] we might have had a little thing, and then we got back together, and this was all before MTV came,” explained Kristin during the special event. “And when they came, obviously they were holding their breath about that…
Kristin admitted that she felt very “threatened” by the producers asking Stephen and Lauren to “hang out” with each other, as she was afraid that he might choose Lauren over her. Lauren, on the other hand, said she was very torn about losing a friend to Stephen.
As for when the height of the drama happened, Lauren remembers a formal winter tragedy.
“[Kristin and Stephen] then they started getting back together, again [Stephen and I] they are in the back of the big party bus talking. And I was like, ‘Well, if you two get back together, it’s okay, I don’t need to be a part of this,'” Lauren said. “And. [Kristin] he came back really angry. It warmed up a bit.”
Neither Kristin nor Stephen could remember the incident, but according to Lauren, “A shoe was thrown. [apart].”

Trey Phillips and Alex Hooser
Alex revealed during the reunion that she and Trey “shared a smooch.”
Dieter Schmitz and Alex Hooser
Although Alex’s romance was not highlighted on Laguna Beach, the former star admitted that she was in a relationship with more than one person on the show. “Me and Dieter … ‘dietered,’” he said with a laugh.
Jessica Smith and Stephen Colletti
Although briefly discussed on Stephen and Kristin’s “Back to the Beach” podcast in 2022, Jessica recalled that she and Stephen “spent the summer, blip,” though she “wouldn’t call it dating.”
Stephen, on the other hand, called it “light in the pan.”
Christina Sinclair and Talan Torriero
Christina made jaws drop when she announced that she was Talan’s “first girlfriend”.
Talan confirmed the news, telling the group, “I remember she was the first girl I kissed on the quad, people watching too. [we] they held hands,” indicating that it was “the second year or less” when they met.
“That’s something people don’t know,” he said, to which Christina replied, “I thought you had forgotten!”

Kristin Cavallari and Lauren Conrad’s Ex Doug Reinhardt
When Lauren recalled her on-camera relationship with Doug Reinhardt in high school, Kristin revealed that she actually dated him her freshman year.
“You don’t let me have one thing?!” Lauren jokingly scolded Kristin before admitting, “We have good taste.”
