J. Smith-Cameron Used Anna Wintour as Elsbeth Inspiration

J. Smith-CameronThe killer of ‘s on Elizabeth it may look familiar – at least to viewers who are fans of the past Vogue chief editor Anna Wintour.
“It was my idea,” Smith-Cameron said alone Us Weekly. “I was like, ‘What if I’m not trying to be Anna Wintour but this woman is trying to be Anna Wintour?’ That is his hero and he will try to emulate.”
Smith-Cameron broke down the idea of the character, adding, “He’s hiding in a mask. I thought that might be fun. I just went online and bought a cheap wig that was pageboy bob–style, and it looked OK on my head. So I used that. And I wasn’t trying to be exactly English. I wanted to sound like someone who was trying to sound a little bit English.”
Before using Wintour as inspiration, Smith-Cameron had a real run-in with the fashion icon.
“I met Anna Wintour once when I was going to a fashion show, and she ended up sitting next to me. “But she was very personable. He was lovely. This is not my opinion of him. It’s just someone I’m infatuated with, that I can relate to. Everyone I know is fascinated by Anna Wintour because she is a very interesting person.”
Elizabethpremiered in 2024, it follows Carrie PrestonElsbeth Tascioni, who becomes a true detective helping the NYPD in their investigation. The titular character’s unusual ways lead him to make unique observations that help solve crimes.
In addition to Preston, the stars of the show Wendell Pierce and allow cameo appearances from Nathan Lane, Laurie Metcalf, Pamela Adlon, Vanessa Williams, Matthew Broderick, Michael Emerson, Keegan-Michael Key, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Retta, Blair Underwood, Linda Lavin and more.
In the Thursday, April 3, episode of the hit CBS series, Smith-Cameron is introduced as a case that follows a powerful patriarch “stabbed at an exclusive New York debutante ball,” according to the synopsis. The description teases how Elsbeth “must fight glove with the powerful football director (Smith-Cameron).”
“This is the kind of show where you get a history. It’s a funny show because it’s a murder mystery show in a way. But it’s a fun and silly show,” he continued. “I just enjoyed that. The characters in Elsbeth go through terrible times. You can relate to them and the way it’s written and handled.”
Elizabeth airs on CBS Thursdays at 10 pm ET. New episodes air the next day on Paramount+.
