Comedian Dave Chappelle said in a new interview that he’s considering revisiting “Chappelle’s Show” decades after leaving the hit Comedy Central series.

Chappelle, speaking about the possibility of renewing the show in an interview with the Associated Press, offered a significant change from his previous position.

“If you had asked me that question a year ago, I would have never told you,” he said. “But in the last few weeks… I’m considering it.”

“Chappelle’s Show,” which premiered in 2003, became a cultural force for its satire on race, politics and American life before Chappelle abruptly stopped producing its third season in 2005. In doing so, Chappelle backed out of a deal with Comedy Central to continue with the show, which cost more than $50 million.

He said at the time he was suffering from chronic fatigue and felt others were trying to control his work. He also told Oprah Winfrey in a 2006 interview that some of his paintings were “not socially conscious.”

Chappelle didn’t give details about what a revival of “The Chappelle Show” might look like but admitted that his thinking has evolved. His comments came as he reflected on the changing landscape of entertainment and his place in it.

Chappelle also revealed how the comedy industry has changed in the years since the show aired, noting the rise of digital platforms and a new generation of comedians creating content in real time. He emphasized the importance of growing with knowledge.

“One of the worst things that can happen to a comedian is to be successful before they’re good,” Chappelle told the AP. “Because you miss the part where you get to experiment and make mistakes.”

Despite the criticism, Chappelle said he remains committed to his approach to comedy.

“Your responsibility is to be true to yourself and to your work,” he said, explaining his philosophy on public responsiveness.

Chappelle framed criticism as something to be affirmed rather than avoided, referring to historical figures who faced backlash in their times.

Sometimes people will attach things to your voice that have nothing to do with you,” he said. “The media used to talk (expletive) about the jokes I made and none of that moved my audience.”
