New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani marked his first 100 days in office Sunday alongside Sen. Bernie Sanders, a democratic socialist, put forward what he described as a major success driven by government intervention.

Mamdani cited significant achievements, including securing $1.2 billion for child care worldwide, the development of five community-run grocery store programs, taking legal action against landlords, and encouraging investment in programs such as sanitation and infrastructure.

Referring to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and her criticism that the socialists “end up running out of other people’s money,” Mamdani defended her administration.

“I have often thought about Margaret Thatcher’s speech, the problem with socialism is that you end up running out of other people’s money,” he said. “Anyway, my friends, it seems that in the end you need a socialist to be cleansed”

Sanders also praised the mayor’s plan, calling it an inspiration to strengthen communities.

“This is the first time I have been introduced by someone who speaks proudly about the will of the people,” said Sanders. “And it feels good.”

Mamdani revealed some important priorities during his first three months in office.

To deal with rising food costs, he proposed opening five community-run, affordable grocery stores — one in each neighborhood — by the end of his first term, a proposal critics say would be a departure from free-market principles. Critics say the plan departs from free market principles. He added that the first location is expected to open next year.

The mayor also pointed to universal childcare as a big early victory, although critics say the scheme is too tax-dependent and could disrupt existing childcare providers. Mamdani noted that this program was completed on his eighth day in office in collaboration with $1.2 billion and Gov. Kathy Hochul from New York.

The administration has stepped up enforcement in the housing sector, with Mamdani claiming to have settled more than 195,000 lawsuits against landlords and recovered more than $34 million in settlements, judgments, and tenant settlements.
