“The Madison” star Kurt Russell opens up about how he agrees with Taylor Sheridan’s script for the show on a personal level as he draws parallels to his true love with Goldie Hawn.
In the new Paramount+ series, the 75-year-old actor plays Preston Clyburn, whose tragic death in the first episode serves as the series’ emotional catalyst as his family struggles to cope with his sudden loss.
In particular, Preston’s death leaves his longtime wife Stacy Clyburn (Michelle Pfeiffer) dealing with grief and the realization that she didn’t fully understand the depth of their connection when he was alive.

In a recent interview with The National, Russell, who has been in a committed relationship with Hawn, 80, for more than 40 years, admitted he was emotional when he read about his character’s love story with Stacy as he felt it was similar to his own.
“I had a hard time reading the scriptures,” Russell said. “They just kept hitting me hard, and I felt like that was a big part of the show’s ability, the ability to capture an audience. The writing was very authentic.”

He continued, “It was so powerful to have a deep, true love relationship with someone, and then one of those people walk away, and the other person realizes how good it was – that they didn’t know there was so much more to it, and they’re not going to let that go.”
Russell and Hawn first met in 1966 while playing together in the western comedy, “The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band.”
At the time, Hawn was 21 and Russell was 16. In 2012, the “To Die For” star told BBC Radio 4 that she thought Russell was “lovely, but he was too young.”
However, the pair’s relationship eventually turned into romance when they starred together in the 1983 film “Swing Shift,” which saw their sizzling chemistry on full display. They reunited a few years later in the beloved 1987 comedy “Overboard.”
In 1986, the couple welcomed son Wyatt, 39. Russell also helped raise Hawn’s daughter. Kate, 46, and son Oliver, 49, from her previous marriage to singer Bill Hudson, 76. The “Escape From New York” star also shares son Boston, 45, with ex-wife, actress Season Hubley, 74.

Russell previously noted the parallels between his character’s marriage and his relationship when he spoke to Men’s Health last month.
“These are some of the discussions [Preston and Stacy] I’ve had it, I’ve had it,” he told the outlet. “Goldie and I had very similar conversations. Their relationship, it’s the kind of relationship you almost don’t see anymore.”
“It’s a really loving relationship,” Russell continued. “It’s not like dropping the other shoe. That’s what makes it difficult [Michelle’s] character when she lost her husband. You see how much they could have had that they didn’t have because of something he didn’t do.”
“I think a lot of people relate to that kind of regret,” he added. “As you get older and have more time left, it doubles things in terms of looking at what you’ve done in your life so far and what you want to do with the rest of your life.”

Stacy, who had never visited Preston’s Montana cabin in her lifetime, discovers that there was a side of herself she never knew existed and regrets not having it when she had the chance.

When speaking to The National, Russell said that he appreciates the way Sheridan balances the show’s difficult themes with humor, especially when dealing with loss.
“What I love about what Taylor does is make it funny, and a lot of jokes, every time he’s around you,” Russell said. “The container that was in the middle of it all is gone, and you can only face it. You won’t find it.”
