Kasparian says the AOC used a ‘Trump-like’ attack on social media

Left-wing commentator Ana Kasparian said this week on an episode of “The Young Turks” that Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D.N.Y., responded to criticism on social media with a personal attack, following a public discussion on X that focused on US policy on Israel and a reported plot targeting activist Nerdeen Kiswani.
Kasparian characterized the response as symptomatic of a broader pattern, contrasting it with rhetoric often associated with President Donald Trump.
“He responded to me, he showed that he has Trump-like responses to members of the media who dare to challenge him,” said Kasparian.
Kasparian pointed to a post Ocasio-Cortez published on X directly responding to his criticism, in which the representative wrote that he “never” supported the claim and accused Kasparian of lying for attention.

“I never have. Feel free to continue lying publicly. Well. Those checks don’t make money on their own, and you don’t have the skills to keep up with the truth,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote.
The discussion began after Ocasio-Cortez issued a statement about the reported assassination plot, denouncing the incident as political violence and confirming that the suspect had been arrested.
“This is a terrible act of political violence. It has no place in our city or our country,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “I thank Ms. Kiswani that she is safe and the victim has been arrested.”
Kasparian said his response to the post was deliberately sarcastic and aimed to highlight what he described as Ocasio-Cortez’s record of support for Israel.

“You should vote to send Israel more money for weapons,” Kasparian wrote in response to X.
Kasparian explained that his criticism stemmed from Ocasio-Cortez’s broader frustration with foreign policy and Democratic Party politics, while addressing Ocasio-Cortez’s alleged misrepresentation of his voting record.
“I’m sick of the AOC being incredibly weak on things it shouldn’t be weak on,” Kasparian said. “If I find out I was wrong… that makes me ashamed, and I want to correct that mistake, but I didn’t make a mistake. You lied.”
Kasparian then cited the 2021 House vote on additional funding for Israel’s Iron Dome program as a key example that shaped his opinion, saying pressure from Democratic leadership influenced the outcome of that vote.
“Initially, the AOC was on the right side… they were going to vote no,” Kasparian said. “Nancy Pelosi… is pressuring him to change his vote, and guess what, the AOC has changed his vote from no to present.”

Referring to footage from the House floor during the 2021 vote on additional funding for the Iron Dome, Kasparian described Ocasio-Cortez as visibly upset after changing her vote from “no” to “present,” a move she said reflected political pressure from the Democratic leadership.
“She was obviously upset… she later confirmed that she was in tears and crying,” Kasparian said.
Kasparian said the shift in votes, which came after initial opposition to the funding, downplayed the differences among the Democratic caucus and showed a broader willingness to commit to party leadership.

No one can force you to change your vote,” said Kasparian. “You changed your vote because you were under a little pressure, which makes your vote invalid because you voted in person. Agreeing to be like Nancy Pelosi shows a terrible level of weakness.”
