The 49ers saw Rangers’ £6m bid accepted for Chermiti’s promotion

Glasgow Rangers have one last break before a tough run for the Scottish Premiership title in the final seven games of the 2025/26 campaign.

Danny Rohl and his staff will use this time away from competitive games to come up with solutions to the problems they have faced in recent weeks, before taking on Dundee United at Ibrox next weekend.

The Light Blues could use this break to start making plans for next summer’s transfer window, with the aim of competing for more trophies next season.

It has already been reported that the Gers are considering a permanent deal for defender Nasser Djiga, who is valued at £5m by Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The Burkina Faso international has started 16 of 18 games in the Premiership, displacing John Souttar in recent games, and has partnered Emmanuel Fernandez.

Rangers are eyeing a move for a new midfielder

As well as being in the market to convert other loan signings to permanent deals, Rangers are looking away from potential arrivals from elsewhere.

For example, the Scottish giants have been linked with Motherwell striker Elijah Just, who has produced seven goals and six assists in the Premiership this season.

Now, according to Football Insider, Rangers are considering a move to sign FC Zurich striker Philippe Keny in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The report says that there are clubs in Belgium, France and England who are also looking at the Senegalese striker, suggesting that there could be serious competition for his signature before the 2026/27 campaign.

It adds that Zurich could demand up to £6m for the 26-year-old striker in the summer, and it remains to be seen whether the 49ers are prepared to spend that money on him.

Football Insider reports that a number of Championship sides, including Wrexham and Coventry City, are lining up a move for the Super League striker, meaning Rangers may need to move quickly to complete a deal.

Why Rangers should pay £6m to sign Keny

The 49-year-olds must submit a £6m offer to be accepted by Zurich as the experienced striker could arrive at Ibrox to replace Youssef Chermiti, 12 months after the club paid £8m to sign him from Everton.

The Gers now have new owners in 49ers Enterprises.

The Portuguese U21 player scored eight goals against Celtic and Hearts, which is commendable, but his record against other teams in this division was not good enough.

Chermiti has scored eight goals in his last four games against Celtic and Hearts, scoring one goal in the other 19 he has played in the league this season.

Keny, meanwhile, has scored in ten of his 25 appearances in the Swiss Super League for Zurich, scoring 12 goals in those 25 appearances so far in the 2025/26 campaign.

The Senegal striker seems to be more consistent with his goalscoring, regularly getting a goal in matches, rather than having many goals in individual games and struggling to spell.

Keny has also created two ‘big chances’ for his side at league level so far this season, suggesting he could provide Rangers with plenty of creative insight.

Both forwards provide solidity at the end of the court, winning 8.7 and 5.9 duels per game respectively, so Rohl shouldn’t have too many problems with their slow play.

It is in goals where Keny looks to be the biggest improvement on Chermiti, however, given both the goals he has scored and the number of games he has scored, while the Portuguese striker has struggled for consistency in the final third.

Signing an experienced striker coming off a strong season in Switzerland would be a smart move for Rangers to bolster their front line, as he could arrive at Ibrox full of confidence and ready to hit the ground running.

Therefore, the 49ers should pay a fee of £ 6m to bring him to the team in the transfer window next summer as an improvement of Chermiti for Rohl.
