Spurs make move to recruit Tudor development who “helped Arteta get Arsenal job”

After the weekend’s clash at home to Nottingham Forest, it feels like a matter of when and not if Igor Tudor will be replaced at Tottenham Hotspur, with the Croatian having plunged the club into the mud during his short-term reign.

Despite the beauty of Spurs’ midweek display against Atletico Madrid, one point from five Premier League games in charge makes for painful reading, as they failed to provide the new manager that was needed.

The injured party undoubtedly has to bear the blame, following a second campaign of top-flight disasters in a row, if there will be any quick fix, it would be to get Tudor out of the firing line.

The 47-year-old was given time to kill after the trip to Anfield and victory over Atleti, but Sunday’s 3-0 defeat proved to be a real step backwards, ensuring a new manager will be in charge when the international break is over.

Where do we go from here? That is the question facing the ENIC regime in N17, with the bold decision to appoint a manager with no Premier League experience, as a coach or player, which has backfired spectacularly.

Desperate times may call for drastic measures, although talk of hiring the likes of Glenn Hoddle and Harry Redknapp seems a step too far, with Ryan Mason already having a few opportunities as a substitute coach.

There is a suggestion that another shortstop, Chris Hughton, could be a target, although, according to reports in France, the Lilywhites may be considering another left-back.

According to L’Equipe, there are suggestions that the north London club have already secured a free agent, Adi Hutter, with the Austrian being contacted by the club this week.

The 56-year-old has been out of work since leaving Ligue 1 side Monaco in 2025, with most of his work prior to that coming in Austria or Germany, as a coach and player.

The report also conveys the suspicion that talks are being held with Roberto De Zerbi, although the persistent idea is that the Italian will wait until the summer.

Why Hutter would be better than Tudor

After the obvious mistake of hiring Tudor, history could repeat itself if the Lilywhites were to replace him with Hutter, regardless of the fact that this is yet another manager to coach in the Premier League.

It’s all going desperate for Spurs, and Sunday is arguably Igor Tudor’s last draft.

With just seven games left to play in the season, that risk seems a step too far, it must be said, though it’s worth saying that if such a call is made, Hutter could at least represent an improvement for an under-fire Croatia.

Nine years older than Tudor, the out-of-work coach boasts more experience at the highest level, with his coaching career so far taking notable stints at Monaco, Borussia Monchengladbach and Eintracht Frankfurt.

It was in that last stint that Hutter appeared to “help Mikel Arteta get the Arsenal job”, according to The Telegraph’s Matt Law, when Frankfurt beat the Gunners 2-1 in Unai Emery’s final game in charge.

He has played his part, albeit somewhat, in Arsenal’s rise under Arteta, with the hope that he can have a real say in Tottenham’s future, should he take over at the end of the season.

A relative unknown to Premier League watchers, Hutter has twice been named Bundesliga coach of the year, having also won league titles in Austria and Switzerland, during spells with Red Bull Salzburg and BSC Young Boys.

Another advantage for Tudor, not just his experience, would be the 56-year-old’s progressive, attack-minded style of play, with Eric Dier praising Hutter’s approach as “similar” to what he encountered with Thomas Tuchel at Bayern Munich.

Unlike Tudor, who established Spurs defensively against the likes of Arsenal in recent weeks, Hutter could inspire something big in this injury-hit club.

Indeed, the man himself has spoken of his desire to play “aggressive football in a good way”, something that could be music to the ears of Spurs fans after a difficult period under Tudor and Thomas Frank.

In his last spell in Ligue 1, for example, Hutter also finished with 1.77 points in his 93 games in charge, surpassing the 1.58 Tudor averaged while playing for Juventus, from just 24 outings.

Of course, Hutter’s new form in the Premier League will certainly be a concern at such a difficult time of the season, but could he be worse than Tudor?

Spurs are in talks to hire a 4-2-3-1 manager like De Zerbi and Pochettino.

Spurs could be on the lookout for yet another new manager in north London.
